On Wednesday, May 3, officers assigned to the Southern District Uniformed Patrol were called to rescue a distressed woman who was reported in the water and out of the line of sight from the shore.

The incident was reported in the 3100 block of Waterview Avenue, not far from Harbor Hospital.

Without hesitation, the responding officers stripped off their gear and dove headfirst into danger to help the woman in what the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) described as “unpredictable waters.”

The officers managed to rescue the woman and returned her to land, where she was treated by members of the Baltimore City Fire Department personnel and taken to an area hospital for treatment and further evaluation.

Officials from the Baltimore City FOP made note that the officers made this brave save knowing that the department’s Marine Unit was previously eliminated, and the Fire Department’s boat was not available at the time.

“The officers in this incident are heroes,” FOP President Mike Mancuso said. “They made the decision to put their own lives at risk, in a situation that is not one that they typically encounter, for the welfare of another human being.”
